What are Good Routers to use for Home or Business?

By | July 27, 2015

When it comes to routers some perform better than others with more features.

For example some routers come with a built in VPN (Virtual Private Network) which allows communications to be encrypted while on the go.

A VPN can take a device such as a smartphone and create a secure tunnel were all data is encrypted over the internet through the router.

There are other ways to create a VPN such as paid services this is just an example of features a good router will have built in.

Lets look at some of the other things a good router will be capable of.

Dual Band Routers
Prior to 2013 all routers transmitted in the 2.4 GHz frequency.

After 2013 Dual Band was introduced which allows routers to also transmit in the 5 GHz frequency.

The 5 GHz frequency was introduced since the old 2.4 GHz band has become over crowded, with every router in a busy location fighting to get a signal through.

Not all router made are dual band and many are still built to only transmit in the 2.4 GHz range.

This may be fine if you don’t live in a city but in a overcrowded area a dual band router can help a signal get through.

The New 802.11ac protocol
Along with the new 5 GHz range a new protocol was also introduced called 802.11ac, often simply called “AC”.

This new protocol can transmit data up to three times faster than the older 802.11n or Wireless-N.

If you are a bandwidth hog than using this new protocol will greatly increase the transmission rate.

Keep in mind any device that is talking to the router must also be 802.11ac capable.

Security
All router will have some good basic security that should be setup to block a possible WiFi hijacker.

Some router do have some added security features but most have some basic setting that will secure a WiFi connection.

Here is a post for the best security setting a router can have in 2015.
