Routers make the internet world go round from connecting wirelessly with WiFI to a Smartphone, tablet, or laptop, to creating your own intranet.
Routers connect to the internet via a cable modem or DSL and then transmit a internet signal throughout your home by cable such as cat 5 or cat 6 or WIfI.
Routers have protocols that talk to devices called 802.11 which is followed by a letter such as a,b,n,ac and the new ax.
For example 802.11ax is the newest protocol for routers and the fastest.
Routers prior to 2013 used the 2.4GHz frequency to transmit but now most use the 5GHz frequency to help the over congested 2.4GHz band.
Most new routers talk in both the 2.4GHz and 5 GHz range and are called dual band routers.
