Routers connect to the internet via a cable modem or DSL and then transmit a internet signal throughout your home by cable such as cat 5 or cat 6 or WIfI.
Routers have protocols that talk to devices called 802.11 which is followed by a letter such as a,b,n,ac.
For example 802.11 ac is the newest protocol for routers and the fastest.
Routers prior to 2013 used the 2.4 ghz frequency to transmit but now use the 5 ghz frequency to help the over congested 2.4 GHz band.
Most new routers talk in both the 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz range and are called dual band routers.
