Big changes are on the way in 2020 for free over-the-air TV with a new broadcast standard called ATSC 3.0.

ATSC 3.0 also called Next Gen TV is the new standard set to replace the older ATSC 1.0 bringing many improvements to free over-the-air TV.

Improvements include Ultra HD 4K TV resolution, high dynamic range, refresh rates up to 120Hz, and better signal reception.

ATSC 3.0 will have much better transmission signals for those who use an antenna to pick up OTA TV.

The current standard being used is called ATSC 1.0 which replaced the older analog transmissions in 2009.

While a big improvement at the time with HD 1080p resolution ATSC 1.0 does have its limitations.

OFD vs 8VSB is key to the difference between 1.0 and 3.0. It’s a completely different system. Although it’s also something that the average person might find hard to understand. It’s why people will need a new tuner. In a simplified way, it’s like the difference between AM and FM radio. The signal is structured differently.
Mobile TV is something that’s more likely to be developed by TV manufacturers.

I think we will all benefit from the new improved reception from the ATSC 3.0. But why didn’t someone think about this for the ATSC 1.0? The last thing I want is to have another dam box. That was part of the reason I cut the cord. Thank you for keeping us informed of the changes.

Until now you used “HEVC 264″decoding, now with “new” UHD you`re going to need new Converter Box “HEVC 265.”In Europe only Germany use this system, but in a long run we all are going to get one. I have all ready one, here is about 30$,(40euros.) And you`re going to need internet more, because many channels are going to be “pay to see.”Only free channels are going to be major channels that your state “gives” you for all to see. That is what happened here in Europe, so it must not be the same… wait and see. One is for sure, those who don`t have new TV`s, must buy new converter box, or set top box for “UHD” feeling…

Stations that convert to ATSC 3.0 have to continue broadcasting in ATSC 1.0 for 5 years after the launch. So, rest easy about any upgrades for now. Just know 5 years after the launch you’ll need to shop for whatever is available and by then everything will be cheaper.
