How To Upgrade Install an Android TV Box to Kodi 17.6 Krypton 2018
Kodi 17.6 Krypton is the newest versions of the ever evolving Kodi media center and is now available to install.

It can be installed to an Android TV box as a upgrade or first time install.

Many android TV box users will no doubt like to upgrade to the newest version.

Minimum Android TV box Requirements for Kodi 17.6 Krypton
The Kodi support team does not give exact hardware requirements since it is constantly being updated.

Here is a quote from the wiki supported hardware page.

“It is very hard to generalize Kodi hardware requirements for Linux-based operating-system distributions on ARM or MIPS based embedded systems”

Personally I would not run Kodi 17.6 on anything with 1GB of RAM or any older ARM processors such as the S802.

A unit with 2GB of RAM and a newer S905 or S912 box should have no problems with Kodi 17.6.

The biggest change to requirements is the need for Android 5.0 Lollipop as a minimum, with no more support for older versions.

Be sure your box has Android 5.0 or higher before attempting to install Kodi 17.6

The android version of a box can be found in Settings–>About page.

Things to Watch Before Upgrading a Kodi Android TV Box.
There are many Kodi boxes available with different Firmware and hardware. With the many units available some boxes may have a firmware setting that blocks an install.

Most units will not have a problem upgrading as long as the hardware and software can support it.

… Does it have a hard / soft reset?
Most boxes will have some type of factory default setting.

While most do some do not, but this is a good thing to know just in-case something was to go wrong with an install.

… Upgrading from an Older Kodi Versions
The Kodi support page recommends only updating from 16 Jarvis, and older installs to update to Jarvis first.

Doing a clean install is also possible but all settings will be erased.

… Android 5.0 Lollipop or Higher
Be sure to have at least Android 5.0 Lollipop or Kodi 17.6 will not install.

In the screenshots and examples below I am using a T95Z Pro android TV box running Kodi 16.1 Jarvis.

The Method 1: Play Store
The first thing to do is to download the Kodi 17.6 APK ARM file.

It can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or from the Kodi site.

It is much easier to use the Play Store since it is automatic but the Kodi Download page can also be used.

Open Google Play Store and type in Kodi or Click Here for Kodi Google Play Store Link

If a version is already installed it may need to be uninstalled first. Very old versions will have an Update button.

Clicking Install or Update will automatically Install the new Kodi 17.6.

Method 2: Manual Download
Manually downloading Kodi from the main site is also easy by opening a Browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or any built in Browser.

Go to the main Kodi download page by Googling it or clicking here for the Kodi Main Download Page.

Scroll down and click were it says Android.

The ARM file to download will depend on your box with 32 bit, and 64 bit options.
How To Upgrade Install an Android TV Box to Kodi 17.6 Krypton
Most all boxes will use the ARMV7A (32BIT) version.

If in doubt simply download and try both, as the wrong file will not install and give an error at some point.

The ARM file can also be copied to a Flash drive or SD-Card with a computer and taken to the box.

After it downloads open File Browser inside Apps.

It will be located in the Download Folder.

Clicking the file will begin the installation.
How To Upgrade an Android TV Box to Krypton Installing
If you are upgrading from an older version the settings usually keep such as add-ons but there is no guarantee.

Kodi support page recommends upgrading only from previous version Kodi 16 Jarvis. If you have a much older Kodi 14 or 15 version, a upgrade to Jarvis may be necessary to keep all the settings.

Of course a clean install can always he done by deleting the old install and simply installing Kodi 17.6.

A clean install will need add-ons setup again but can often be the best method in some scenarios.

After it installs Kodi 17.6 will be ready to run.

If the add-ons get erased, read here for the top Kodi add-ons and how to install them.

Possible Errors and Problems
The possibility for problems during a install can always happen and may be unique to your box or to all android systems.

Here are some errors I ran into while installing Kodi Krypton on a few different boxes.

If the wrong file is downloaded and is tried to install it will give an error “Kodi Not Installed”. This is usually because the system can only run the 32bit or 64bit file.

It will not harm anything to run the wrong file and will simply give an error part way through the install, If this happens use the other ARM file.

Another common error is “There is a Problem Parsing This Package”.
How To Upgrade an Android TV Box to Kodi 17 Parse Error Krypton
This is a generic error that can be caused by a few things. The main thing is be sure that Install from Unknown Sources is set to ON.
How To Upgrade an Android TV Box to Kodi 17 Usnknaown Sources Krypton
Unknown Sources will be located under Security in Settings.

Some boxes like to give a Parsing Error if the Developer options are set to off.

A MXV box did this and to enable the Developer Options I had to go to the About Page and click the “Build Number” 7 times. Kodi then loaded fine.

Summary
With the new Kodi Krypton now available many will no doubt like to upgrade with most having no problems.

While upgrading is nice keep in mind there is always the potential for something to go wrong.

If you are a technical person you likely will be able to work through most any problem that arises.

If you are not technical and have a older version of Kodi installed, it may be a good idea to wait as long as the current version is working.

I have un plugged and replugged several times. I’m not Technical or computer literate. Need help. Thanks

I was asked to install a newer version of kodi so I did. Now I don’t have any files in my repository. When I try to down load addons I get to where I put in the key path for media source and then enter name for media source and then click ok and then I get this message
Couldn’t retrieve directory information this could be due to the network not being connected.
So I can’t get any zip files to download so I can unzip files into my repository.
I know my internet is connected and I can go out to the internet and get email and also used it to install the newer version of kodi.
Can you help me so I can get back using kodi on my tickbox.

its because your source is not working anymore or has gone offline. if using kodi krypton try “http://nolimitsbuilds.com/kodi” and install the video plugin listed to enable the wizard. from the wizard i usually get better download speeds from server 4 or 5

i just bought the 96+ pro with 3gb 32 gb memory, and KDMC is loaded on but only 17.4. no matter what i do it will not allow me to upgrade to 17.6. i have tried downloading it from playstore, but it says it is already installed. why wont it allow me to upgrade it? is it because it is in KDMC format and not Kodi?

dont use the settings from the app menu, use the settings on the main page, goto apps, and that where you can remove KD Player and install kodi 17.6

I just updated my Kodi Jarvis 16.1 to Kodi Krypton 17.4. The install went ok but how do I get it to load like before. I mean that before when I loaded Kodi I would get a screen with icons of my apps (I use Exodus) but now I get a screen with a list on the left then I have to click on my videos then choose Exodus. Also the movies and tv shows are listed instead of being shown as icons. Is it possible to have this done? If so I would appreciate any help I can get in doing this. I should mention that I am a novice with this.
    Thanks,

I am using MXQ 4K Pro Android TV Box and the System Memory – 1GB DDR3.
As you have suggested it is better to have at least 2GB system memory to run smoothly.
Is there any method of upgrading the system memory of MXQ 4K Pro TV Box from 1GB to 2GB?

    Q Box is AMLogic – its all 32bit Android – use armeabi-v7.apk

    nVIDIA Shield is 64bit – use ARMv8A (64bit)

Kodi also recommends MarshMellow for android stb’s . I have two with Jarvis and MarshMellow but will wait until some bugs get worked out. I have read other forms and they say there maybe trouble with KitKat. so, I guess as Kodi evolves to newer versions, our old STBs will be door stops. I just got rid of a bunch of IKS STBs in SD, everything now is in HD. These Androids and other STBs will be the same way. One will have to upgrade every once in a while to stay up with technology. Which is a good thing!! The Dinosaurs died off too. 🙂 So bottom line is, get the latest STB available every time you upgrade. I suggest everyone go to the Kodi (official) forum and read, read, read.

Hi the only way you can install the new version you have to delete kodi 16.0 or 16.1 which ever you have and then download the new version of kodi 17.1 you will get error saying app not install because you need to delete the older version of kodi unorder to install the new version

Be sure the UNKNOWN SOURCES in settings is ON. or it won’t load. Kodi is not an official Android app. If that setting is not ON you can forget it!! JailBroken is the same thing. Go to some of the Android forums or Kodi froums and you will learn a lot. Just Google Kodi or Android forums.

Kodi 17 does not play 4k videos smoothly, it has problems with 1080p videos as well.

Unfortunately Xtreamer mXV forces to upgrade Kodi to version 17. I can not turn this off. After deleting the new Krypton version, I can install the Jarvis again, but during the next reboot, the mXV installs the Krypton without asking me!

And Kodi v17Krypton is too much for the mXV. The 4K videos are lagging on Krypton using the mXV and some lagging can be seen on the 1080p videos as well. These videos can be played smoothly using Jarvis.

But I’m still looking for the way to prevent the Xtreamer mXV to stop uprading Kodi without my permission.

Good luck with the M8. Mine is toast!!! It’s too out of date. If you want to try here is a website that has all of the firmwares for China built (99% of STB’s are from China) http:// chinagadgetsreviews.com/firmwares.

Go get the latest STB you can find. 64 bit quad core (fastest one you can find) 2 gig. rom and 8-16 gig. storage . OR even higher. In a few years or less these will be obsolete too.
